PanelTech Systems has completed a significant second-storey renovation in Highett, Victoria, showcasing the speed, precision, and versatility of Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) construction in a live residential upgrade.

Delivered in partnership with Hycon Homes, the project transformed an existing single-storey residence into a modern double-storey home. Despite challenging cold and wet weather conditions throughout the installation, the build experienced only minimal delays, demonstrating the efficiency and reliability of the SIP construction process.

Prefabricated floor, wall, and roof panels were manufactured off-site and delivered ready for installation, allowing the structure to be rapidly assembled with the assistance of a crane. This streamlined approach significantly reduced on-site construction time while providing exceptional thermal performance, airtightness, and structural integrity.

The project highlights how SIP construction is not only ideal for new homes but also for complex renovations and extensions where speed, accuracy, and reduced disruption are critical. By combining advanced prefabrication with experienced installation teams, PanelTech Systems continues to help builders deliver high-performance homes faster than traditional building methods.

The process

Careful planning and coordination played a crucial role in the success of this Highett renovation. With the existing home remaining in place, the installation required precise scheduling and crane operations to safely position the prefabricated floor and wall panels above the original structure.

Manufactured off-site to exact specifications, the SIP panels arrived on site ready for installation, allowing the Hycon Homes team to work efficiently despite cold and wet weather conditions. The second-storey structure was assembled rapidly, with floor panels, external walls, and roof sections installed in sequence to minimise delays and keep the project moving forward.

Once the structural shell was complete, sealing and connection detailing were carried out to ensure the building achieved the high levels of thermal performance and airtightness expected from a SIP construction system. The speed of installation enabled follow-on trades to commence sooner, accelerating the overall renovation program and reducing disruption to the site.

Through close collaboration between PanelTech Systems and Hycon Homes, the project was delivered with minimal waste, reduced on-site labour requirements, and a high-performance building envelope that will provide long-term comfort and energy efficiency for the homeowners.

Stage 01 - Design & Engineering

Every project begins with detailed design, engineering, and shop drawings. PanelTech Systems works closely with the builder to ensure all floor, wall, and roof panels are manufactured to the exact specifications of the project, reducing errors and delays during installation.

Stage 02 - Off-Site Manufacturing

Structural Insulated Panels are precision manufactured in a controlled factory environment. Openings for windows, doors, and structural connections are pre-cut, ensuring consistent quality, minimal material waste, and faster on-site assembly.

Stage 03 - Delivery & Installation

Panels are delivered to site in a planned installation sequence and craned into position by the installation team. Floor panels, walls, and roof sections are assembled quickly and accurately, allowing the structure to take shape in a matter of days rather than weeks.

Stage 04 - Sealing & Lock-Up

Once installed, all panel connections are sealed to maximise thermal performance and airtightness. The building envelope becomes weather-tight quickly, enabling follow-on trades such as windows, roofing, cladding, and internal works to commence sooner and keep the project on schedule.
